Kallisto
Kallisto
Mother and child, the wonderful myth of CallistoÂ
Kallisto was the daughter of King Lycaon. She was one of the followers of Artemis that swore to preserve her virginity for as long as she remained in the company of the goddess. But after she was seduced by the god Zeus, she kept the fact hidden. Her condition was eventually revealed during the bath and Artemis and in her fury the goddess transformed Kallisto into a bear. Hunters later caught and delivered her and her son Arkas to King Lykaon. When the boy was fully grown, Kallisto inadvertently wandered into the sanctuary of Zeus Lykaios and Arkas, not knowing the bear's identity, tried to kill her for the sacrilege but Zeus intervened by transferring the pair to the stars. So her and her son are shining in the sky as ursa major and ursa minor.
