Echo was a mountain nymph. She had learned to play music and sing from the muses, and she had a very fine voice. But Hera had punished her by taking away her voice, she could only repeat the last syllable of her interlocutor. During one of her wanderings in the woods , she saw a very handsome man and fell in love with him. But she was never able to express to him what she felt because of this problem. The man was Narcissus, who was too devoted to himself anyway to pay attention to another human being. Despite this, Echo was never able to speak to him.
