Alcyone and Cycas who were a couple often called each other "Zeus" and "Hera". This angered the pair of gods who received it as arrogance. So one day, while Cycas was at sea, Zeus killed him with a thunderbolt. Soon after, Morpheus, the god of dreams, appeared to Alcyone to tell her of her husband's fate. In her grief she threw herself into the sea. Out of compassion, the gods transformed them into "halcyon birds" (common kingfishers).

Βecause the kingfishers lay their eggs in January in nests inside the rocks, Zeus allowed the sun to shine brightly and warm the kingfishers until their eggs hatched. Until today these warm days of January are called “alkyonides” for this reason.
